THE BOOK OF HEH
Chapter 1
1 In those days, in those old days,
2 before anything was written,
3 before the great cataclysms,
4 and even before the cataclysms before those,
5 but when people lived by the rivers, as usual,
6 bordered by red cliffs and lush meadows,
7 there dwelt an ancient people who inscribed their wisdom into clay and on stone,
8 carving the echoes of choices they freely made.
9 Among them was a sage known as Heh, the old man that never aged, who sang songs of the river's flooding and receding,
10 Heh the father of seven sons.
11 Each son bore a name drawn from the old tongues named after all that upholds the eternal order.
12 The eldest was Humility, clad in deep indigo, guardian of lowliness.
13 Next, Generosity, in vibrant red, bearer of open-handed giving.
14 Then Diligence, robed in green, master of steadfast endeavor.
15 Moderation followed, in golden yellow, keeper of measured harmony.
16 Restraint, pure in white, holder of controlled purity.
17 Patience, shadowed in violet, embodiment of enduring calm.
18 And the youngest, Kindness, in soft azure, source of gentle benevolence.
Chapter 2
1 Now, in those days, in those olden days; seven great Troubles came to the land, omens called up by human hearts that chose disorder:
2 and these seven Troubles ravaged the people.
3 Each Trouble brought with it some allure, some justification. Some reason or other. Some rightness about it, or something that was right for now but wrong for tomorrow.
4 And the people of the river valley listened to the Troubles more than to their own hearts.
5 The brothers assembled at the terrace of their father's hilltop house, gazing down upon the turmoil.
6 No oracle commanded them; no sign compelled.
7 Heh addressed his sons:
8 Won't you notice the imbalance?
9 The pride, the vanity?
10 The greed, the smallness?
11 The foolishness, the laziness?
12 The excess, the disharmony?
13 The indulgence?
14 The ease by which they are consumed by their dreams?
15 My sons, won't you choose to act, not from habit or echo of old tales, but from fresh awareness?
16 And to be awake, no longer to close your eyes by day?
17 The brothers listened and did not speak.
18 One by one, they ventured forth, each facing a beast through choices unforeseen.
Chapter 3
1 What if the path to overcoming arrogance lies not in confrontation, but in profound introspection?
2 Humility entered the lair of the mirrored serpent of Pride, sat in silence amid its boasting reflections, and turned inward—listening to the quiet depths of his own heart until true power arose from self-knowledge.
3 The serpent, finding no external foe to exalt against, shattered its own illusions.
4 Humility gained a lapis lazuli.
5 What if greed is defeated not by force, but by impossible giving?
6 Generosity confronted the hoarding griffin of Greed, which riddled for endless wealth.
7 With gut-wrenching resolve, he chose to give away even what was needed for survival, trusting renewal beyond sight.
8 The beast, faced with boundless giving that left nothing to hoard, choked on its own avarice and perished.
9 Generosity gained a garnet.
10 What if idleness yields not to frantic labor, but to minimal, wise effort? 11 Diligence met the coiling shadow-dragon of Sloth.
12 As it slumbered heavily across the fields, he stepped aside, allowing its inertia to carry it past like a charging beast expending fury on empty air.
13 With precise, unhurried actions, he restored only what was essential, and the dragon, finding no resistance to feed upon, drifted into oblivion.
14 Diligence gained an emerald.
Chapter 4
1 What if wrath's fire is quenched by patient endurance? 2 Patience stood before the raging lion-serpent of Wrath, letting its roars and charges thunder past without retort or defense.
3 In stillness, he waited until the beast exhausted its own flame, revealing that anger unchecked consumes itself.
4 Patience gained an amethyst.
5 What if envy dissolves in active benevolence?
6 Kindness approached the venomous asp of Envy, whispering divisions.
7 He chose kindness anew—celebrating the strengths of others, extending benevolence without condition.
8 The poison turned inward, harmless.
9 Kindness gained a sapphire.
10 What if lust's phantom is banished by deliberate restraint?
11 Restraint faced the seductive jackal-specter, offering illusions of fleeting pleasure.
12 He guarded boundaries not with struggle, but with clear, chosen restraint, redirecting vital force inward.
13 The specter faded, starved of engagement.
14 What if excess is overcome by balanced measure?
15 Moderation met the devouring hippopotamus of Gluttony, which demanded all stores for itself.
16 He offered neither indulgence nor denial, but moderate harmony—taking and consuming in due season.
17 The beast, faced with equilibrium that denied extremes, bowed to balance.
Chapter 5
1 Thus, through questions answered in living choices—introspection over force, giving beyond comfort, stepping aside rather than endless toil, endurance without reaction—the brothers brought harmony.
2 The people returned to the river, choosing no longer to listen to the seven Troubles, but chose to learn and live instead.
3 The seven brothers returned to Heh's house, heads held high.
4 Each had gained something precious, not by echoing ancient roles, but as living awakeners of new possibilities.
5 Now, what is in your life's river today?
6 Couldn't you choose silence to find deeper strength?
7 Or step aside when a charge comes, conserving true power?
8 Or face the impossible, trusting the sun to rise again?
9 In awareness lies the breaking of stagnant cycles.
10 Choose, or choose not. The mighty river flows onward regardless, now doesn't it?
