Bobby here. Who wants to race me to the top of a shale hill? As somebody who just loves how nature inspires all art, I love getting out and skipping up hills, sliding down slopes, hurling boulders and snagging crystals out of the earth. Today my lovely wife Jess joined me. In this video, she’d already made it back down. But the climb up was another story. Now, the shale in these hills is soft when compared to other rocks. The surface is almost sandy, and the small chunks of stone clatter with the sound of pottery. I was wearing sweatpants and used no gloves. My shoes certainly filled with smaller gravel. Last year we explored the mountains east of Beaver Dam, Nevada. After over a mile of thorns, foxtails and cacti we finally got to the beautiful and strange mountain (which is deceptively far away). The rocks there felt serrated to the touch, by comparison. No, this shale in Iron County is not unpleasant on the hands. So if I challenge you to a race up a shale hill, it is probably less lethal than other kinds of terrain, so take courage. 🙂 #ironcounty #cedarcity #cedarcityutah
